Editing Images
Removing the Background
Photoshop
- Load up 'Photoshop'.
- Do this by clicking 'start' on desktop. Then select the 'All Programs' then 'Adobe Web Premium C55.5'.
- In order to add an image onto 'Photoshop', click 'File', 'Open' and find the image from the file that needs to be manipulated. Once found, select the image and click the 'OK' button.
- To remove the background of the image, click the 'Quick Selection Tool' and start to remove the background by holding the left button down and move the mouse, depending on where you want to select around the image.
- If the outline cuts too far down on the image e.g. cuts the shoulder out, click 'Alt' and press the left button on the mouse to drag the outline line up until it identifies the outline of the person.
- Once content with the outline, you then need to Inverse the image so that the person is selected instead of the background. In order to do this correctly, click 'Select' and then 'Inverse'. Now the image should be selected and the point of focus.
- Next, you should be able to make the edges of the cut out look less harsh by selecting 'Refine Edge'. A panel should appear of which allows you to detect the edges of the outline. To do this, select 'Edge Detection'. Now, you are bale to select the 'Radius' and refine the edges of your image.
- Once happy, click 'OK'.
- Now, inverse the image back by clicking 'Select' and 'Inverse'.
- Use the 'Move Tool' option by clicking it and select the background and press the 'Delete' button on your keyboard.
- You should now have an image with the background removed. Save this as a 'JPEG' image.
InDesign
- Now insert the image onto InDesign you click 'File' then 'Place'. Select the image you would like then press 'Open'.
- For the image to show up on the page, click anywhere on the document and the image will become large on the page.
- If needed, to change the size of the image, use the 'Direct Selection' tool to change the size of the outer box (in orange) and then the inner (In blue). The inner box changes the actual size of the image and the outer box, if made smaller, cuts through the image, acting like it's cropping it. To avoid this, make the box larger by clicking on it (it's the colour blue) and drag it outwards (Or inwards if needed).
- If you want to add text to the page, select the rectangle box with the cross inside and draw it out on the page. To add text, make sure the box is highlighted and click the 'T' for on the tool option so then you can start typing information in that box.
- If wanting to, you can change the colour of the text and outline of it by highlighting it and selecting the 'Default colour' option tool. You can double click the 'T' filled with the black colour. Once double clicked, a box with colour options pops up and you're able to select the colour you desire.
- Next, it is recommended to put your image on another layer. In order to do this, click the box around the image you want to copy then select the 'Window' button, then 'New Layer' and then 'Paste' the image.
- If wanting to clean up the image more, select the image which is also known as the 'Object'. Click on the 'Object' menu, select 'Clipping path' and it should be now that you will see options. One of which is 'Type'. Select 'Detect Edges' and then click the 'OK' button.
- If you wanted to, you could add an effect to the object (Image). To do so, select the object, click the 'Effects' button and use the 'Basic Feather' effect which will create a smoother edge so the object edges, again, do not look too harsh. Select 'Feather Width' (larger width will feather a larger area) that suits you and select the 'OK' button.
- Save this design when happy by clicking 'File' and 'Save As'. Type in a suitable name and click 'OK'.

School Magazine Front Cover Analysis
School Magazine Front Cover Analysis
I chose the name 'BREAK-TIME' for my magazine because people can read this is their free time, which for the majority of the school is break time and lunch time. It can also connote that this magazine will be for sale at breaktimes. I have used the colours black and yellow as they're the schools traditional colours. I have used a bold black stroke around the yellow writing so that the yellow writing stands out on the white background. I have used the colour yellow as it stands out on the magazine, this could highlight the main purposes and the inner stories of the magazine.
I have used a medium shot image of a year 12 student called Megan, who has recently sat her GCSE's. The image of Megan dominates the front cover, I used a sixth former so that it allows the younger year groups such as year 10/11's who are sitting their GCSE'S to read the article on revision tips and help them while sitting their exams. Before removing the background of this image there was a wall and metal cupboard, I removed the background as I felt that the image would look better without the background. This student is wearing her own clothes which connotes her year group as the sixth formers do not have to wear the traditional school uniform.
The first subsidiary image I have used is of 3 sixth form students. I did this to show what technology students are using to help the readers understand what they can use to help them learn in the future. I used sixth formers because they are role models for the younger years of the school.
I used this image of a class of students because it shows sixth formers hard at work. No matter how free time a sixth former has, they still have to work hard.
This subsidiary image is of a teacher to represent the English department in the school. This teacher is stood in front of an English board which makes it clear that she is part of this department. I used this image to represent the GCSE English grades in 2015.
On the right of my page I have used four sell lines, this indicated the content of the magazine. I used black writing as I think it works well on the white background. I used a different font for the sell lines to make it look more interesting on the page. The writing is also a reasonable size so that it is visible and readable on the page.
I then put a price for the magazine on the bottom left corner. I did this so the customer knows what price they're paying for the magazine.
I decided to use a splash and a pull quote on my front cover. I used a pull quote to give the reader an idea of what the sixth former has said in the article inside. I also used a splash 'Exclusive' to show that this story will only be found by this person in this school magazine.
Completed Front Cover
This is my completed front page of my magazine it has an organised and clear layout. It isn't too cluttered or messy, and is presented well. My front cover shows information about school life which would appeal to my target audience who are pupils and students in King Henry. I believe that my front cover is recognisable to the school as has students and teachers from the school and it uses the traditional colours.

School contents Page
This is my school contents page. I have added images to make it look more interesting and used the colour scheme of yellow, white and black to represent the school. I have carried out the colour scheme to make the magazine look a part of it. I attempted to experiment with boarder lines, in black, making it look more neat and well presented. I have tried to keep the contents page conventional by trying to making a white border in between. However, I only have two columns, which challenges the conventional look. I included page numbers so that the contents page looks more professional and conventional. These page references are smaller than the font of the main writing because I didn't want the focus being taken off the content of the page. My writing style is formal making the magazine more professional and representing the school.
I have experimented with different tools when designing the contents page in order to make myself comfortable when actually designing my final design. I used a shadow for the word 'CONTENTS' to make it look more 3D and more noticeable. I have used a conventional design for the masthead because many magazine contents pages include their logo somewhere on the page of the contents. Usually in the corner where mine is placed. I have added boxes around some separate chunks of information in order to make it look more neat and therefore, attract the reader. I am hoping to use InDesign for my final contents page as I have practiced for this page and I am slightly more comfortable with using this software.

My school magazine cover
Colour scheme
The colours I have chosen to be on my magazine are yellow, black and white. My writing is going to be yellow and the background where I have writing such as my header bar is black. Blank spaces are white so the main images stand out more. I chose these colours because it fits in with the school logo. I will consistently use these colours to make sure all the pages match and they aren't dramatically different.
Layout
On my magazine cover I have started to included subsidiary images of some students and a teacher. I have also included a main image of which I took myself of a student at King Henry school. I chose the name 'BREAK-TIME' for my masthead because it highlights the fact that it sounds like a magazine you would buy at break time. I have added a header and footer bar to make ther magazine bold and stand out.
